BRUSSELS, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The Border Commissions of Armenia and Azerbaijan will hold their first meeting in the coming days, European Council President Charles Michel said here on Monday.
"The first joint meeting of the Border Commissions will take place on the inter-state border in the coming days. It will address all questions related to the delimitation of the border and how best to ensure a stable situation," Michel said at a press briefing after his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia late on Sunday.
Michel described their discussions as "frank and productive."
Michel met Aliyev and Pashinyan for the third time for talks aimed at normalizing the two neighboring countries' relations.
The foreign ministries of Armenia and Azerbaijan "will take forward this process in the coming weeks," Michel said.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at loggerheads over the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh since 1988. Peace talks have been held since 1994, when a ceasefire was agreed, but there have been sporadic minor clashes since then.
A new round of armed conflict broke out along the contact line on Sept. 27, 2020, before Russia brokered a ceasefire on Nov 9, 2020.
On Nov. 26, 2021, Aliyev and Pashinyan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi, Russia, where they agreed on creating mechanisms for demarcation and delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
During their previous meeting in April, Aliyev and Pashinyan launched a peace treaty process mediated by the European Union (EU), and they agreed to establish Border Commissions to work on the border delimitation issue.
