Big Ten football expected not to happen this fall: Reaction shows grief, understanding, confusion

The news of the Big Ten voting to shut down football for the fall has sent shock waves through the sports world. And there is no shortage of reaction on social media from players, coaches, sports personalities, media members and fans.

Even President Donald Trump has thoughts on the matter:

One of the overriding sentiments is bolstered by the trending hastag #WeWantToPlay. A large group of players, spanning all of the Power Five conferences, have laid out a list of measures they'd like to see implemented by college sports in order to play safely.

But that seems to be rendered moot by the Big Ten. For now.

And who knows how the other Power Five conference will respond:

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh is in lock step with those players. He released a statement on Monday explaining why he'd like to see college football play this fall, citing many of the measures U-M has taken to keep players and coaches safe.

But again, it doesn't look like that's happening.

Despite the pleas from players, including Michigan State defensive lineman Naquan Jones:

And to give some more perspective, Jones' teammate, Connor Heyward, offered this insight:

And to further show just how complex this issue is, here is their teammate, DeAri Todd:

But, again, the other side of this coin:

Former college football players are also chiming in, including former Ohio State and Detroit Cass Tech running back Mike Weber:

And this from the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, LSU national champion and 2020 No. 1 NFL draft pick Joe Burrow:

And the players' feelings on different sides of this issue is reflected in fans, too. But initially, there was a lot of disappointment:

Whatever happens next, college coaches, athletic directors and president understand the next steps for them and their players will be uncharted territory:

There was also a brief moment of levity, this from a football fan Twitter account:

And another from MSU tight end Matt Dotson:
