DC area sees scattered storms, hot weather during July 4 weekend

Fourth of July fireworks went off without a hitch Saturday night, as scattered storms Saturday afternoon cleared out of the region before sunset.

The holiday weekend will see the current heat wave continue, with high temperatures in the low 90s. Storm Team4 meteorologist Somara Theodore said because of dew points in the low 70s, the temperature will feel close to 100 degrees in some parts of the region.

A weak cold front pushing in from the northeast help set off widely scattered thunderstorms in some parts of the region late Saturday afternoon. Storm Team4 meteorologist Mike Stinneford said the storms may produce damaging winds, hail and deadly lightning.

The National Weather Service issued Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for parts of Prince George’s County and Charles County. But, those storms cleared out well before the fireworks shows began Saturday night.

One thing to keep in mind during the July 4 festivities is what meteorologists refer to as a temperature inversion, according to Storm Team4 meteorologist Amelia Draper.

That means cooler air will be toward the surface while warmer air will be higher up, potentially making it harder for smoke from fireworks to clear out.

Draper said the temperature inversion does not appear to be as strong as it was last year, but she added that if a strong storm gets in close to the District, it could hamper visibility for fireworks shows.

A full moon Saturday night could also take some of the vibrancy out of fireworks due to light pollution, according to Storm Team4 meteorologist Lauryn Ricketts

Sunday will see plenty of sunshine with temperatures staying in the low 90s and heat indexes approaching 100. There will be another isolated chance of storms in the afternoon and early evening.

Sunday will kick off nearly a full week of sunny, hot and dry weather.
