NHL draft lottery: New York Rangers, 40 points better than Red Wings, win first pick

The NHL made a mockery of the draft lottery this year, rewarding a team that was deemed good enough to partake in the 2020 playoffs.

The New York Rangers, who finished with 79 points, won the right to make the first selection, which is expected to be left wing Alexis Lafrenière. The draft is scheduled to take place Oct. 9-10.

The phase two drawing featured the eight losers of the qualifying round, a mix that also included the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes and Winnipeg Jets. A second lottery was needed after the June 26 phase resulted in a placeholder winning the first pick.

A second drawing was necessitated when, during the June 26 drawing, a place-holder won the first pick. The NHL included the losers of the qualifying round in response to the 2019-20 season being cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. That ended including the Oilers, home to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Leafs, home to Auston Matthews, and the Penguins, home to Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

The other teams are the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes and Winnipeg Jets.

The Wings, who finished last in the with a 17-49-5 record, were pushed back to fourth. The draft is scheduled to take place Oct. 9-10.
