Trump Reportedly Planning To Divert More Funds For The Border Wall

Multiple sources say $7.2 billion will be reallocated from two Pentagon funds.

President Donald Trump reportedly plans to divert an additional $7.2 billion in Pentagon funds to build barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border.

That's more than five times the amount Congress authorized for border wall construction in December.

Multiple sources say the $7.2 billion will come from two sources: $3.7 billion from military construction projects and about $3.6 billion from counter-drug operations.

The Trump administration used the president's national emergency declaration to divert money from those Pentagon funds in 2019. But it would pull more money from those pots this year.

Reports say this new funding would be put toward the completion of 885 miles of border fencing by 2022.

President Trump already pledged to build 450 miles of fencing by the end of the year. So far, the Department of Homeland Security says about 100 miles have been constructed.

The Trump administration is facing multiple lawsuits over its decision to reallocate money toward border barrier construction. But several courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have allowed the funds to be diverted while the legal proceedings play out.
