Housing authority conducts drive at Bhashantek slum

National Housing Authority (NHA) today conducted an eviction drive at a slum in Bhashantek of the city today.

The eviction drive was carried out in presence of a magistrate of the NHA and policemen from 9:00am to 4:30pm, Munshi Sabbir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Bhashantek Police Station, told The Daily Star.

M Javed, a local, told The Daily Star that the drive team evicted nearly 2000 shanties in Bhashantek slum no. 3 by demolishing.

Many of the dwellers could not save their valuables as they were out of shanties though the authority repeatedly asked them to vacate the place, he said.

Abdullah Hil Baki, subdivisional engineer (Dhaka) of National Housing Authority (NHA), said the NHA has 10 acres of land. “The drive will continue,” he added.
