Journos demand withdrawal of case

Journalists from a human chain in front of deputy commissioner’s office in Chapainawabganj town yesterday demanded withdrawal of a defamation case that was filed against a local journalist.

The case was filed on August 19 against Monwar Hossain Jewel of private television channel Jamuna TV.

Several hundred people, aside from journalists, joined the human chain.

Jafrul Alam, president of Chapainawabganj Zila Press Club; Mahbubul Alam, president of Chapainawabganj Press Club; Shahidul Huda Alok, its general secretary; and journalist Kamal Uddin spoke at the event among others.

Demanding withdrawal of the case, the speakers said the case is tantamount to interference with freedom of press and it was intended to harass the journalist.

Advocate Anwar Sadat, also a working committee member of Bangladesh Jubo League’s Shibganj upazila unit, filed the case with the judicial magistrate’s court.

The complainant alleged that Monwar’s report, aired on August 15 regarding alleged involvement of Chapainawabganj-1 (Shibganj) lawmaker Dr Samiluddin Ahmed in corruption at Sonamasjid land port, was defamatory in nature.
