Andrea Polanco, Reporting
Thirty-year-old Yancy Ek was knocked down and killed in his home village of San Narciso in the Corozal District. Ek, a father of two, was riding a bike just a stone’s throw away from his house when a vehicle hit him from behind. Just minutes before he died he was hanging out with a few friends and left to go buy food at a nearby restaurant and was on his way back when his friends heard a loud bang.
Eder Patt , First responder/Friend of Deceased
“The guy reached and talked with us and left. We then heard the impact of what happened so we went to see and saw that he was involved. We picked him up – the ambulance and the police didn’t reach so we took him the chairman’s vehicle. He died as we were heading out of Libertad. He took my hand and he said. “I am going” and he died.”
Eyewitnesses in the village allege that the vehicle was travelling at a high speed when it crashed into Ek on his bicycle. The impact sent Ek flying off the road. The vehicle slammed into this lamppost before it landed in a nearby ditch. The driver of the vehicle was Yancy Ek’s cousin, JorgeCawich.
“He was crying saying that he didn’t know what he had done. He was just crying in disbelief. Yes, he is a relative. He is Yancy’s cousin.”
While there are allegations that the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol, police say that hasn’t been proven but the driver has been detained.
Supt. Hilberto Romero, Acting O.C., Crimes Investigation Branch
“Jorge Cawich has since been detained. He is detained at this time pending an investigation of this fatal RTA.”
“Was alcohol involved in either case?”
Supt. Hilberto Romero
“We are not sure at this time; investigation thereafter will reveal that.”
