By Aaron Humes: They are the scions of their powerful Northern families, and there is no love lost between electoral neighbors and rivals, John Briceño and Gaspar Vega.
Vega is still a divisive figure and showed a non-committal attitude when asked yet again if he would go for another term in his constituency of Orange Walk North while appearing last Sunday in Belize City in support of John Saldivar during his launch for the bid to the United Democratic Party (U.D.P.) leadership.
Vega said he would do it “if his people support it,” while noting that the People’s United Party won away his village base in the recent village council elections despite his reemergence to campaign.
And knowing that, says Briceño, it sounds like an admission of failure and backing away; but he is not convinced.
“… When he said that the PUP won all the village councils I think he is telling you, in effect said he was not going to run; because Gaspar Vega is a coward. Gaspar Vega does not want to lose, so he will not run; but we want him to run, so that we can beat him whenever [they] call the next general elections.”
