By BBN Staff: The Cabinet has appointed Former Foreign Minister, Assad Shoman, as Belize’s Agent at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Prime Minister Dean Barrow today informed that Shoman will be working from an office in Belmopan City but will travel to the Netherlands whenever necessary and use Belize’s Embassy in Brussels.
PM Barrow asserted that Shoman will be paid at the level of an ambassador but he has written to the Governor General requesting that Shoman be appointed a Special Envoy to the Prime Minister on sovereignty matters.
“ We thought maybe it would have been necessary to actually set up an embassy at the Hague, but we have taken advice and that’s not required. That would be additional costs that we can avoid, so Assad will work out of Belmopan. He will have to travel as much as is necessary and we will use our mission in Brussels as the sort of post office, as the address for service,” Barrow stated.
In addition, PM Barrow said that Shoman will also work with Ambassador Dylan Vernon for the purposes of ensuring that we are bang-on-form in relation to our case at the World court.
Belize and Guatemala are seeking to find a final solution to the long standing territorial claim by Guatemala.
