Priyashna Prasad misses the moral support from her late dad as she prepares for the week-long Vodafone Tebara Carnival at Syria Park, Nausori, from September 9-16.

Sponsored by Nausori Plaza, she only wished her father was among the family members to witness her participation at the event.

Ms Prasad, 20, is one of six contestants vying for the queen’s title.

“Before my father’s passing in 2019, he had expressed a desire for me to compete in the Tebara Carnival,” she said.

“In 2017, I captured the Miss Sanatan title and he wanted to see me participate on a bigger platform. He consistently encouraged me to stand out, speak up and step out of my comfort zone.

“Even though my dad is no longer here with me, I am fulfilling his dream. His aspiration was to witness me stand as a brave girl and be crowned queen of a carnival.”

The second-year University of the South Pacific student is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in commerce.

As the youngest of three siblings, she will be advocating against cyberbullying.

“It is crucial because many fail to recognise it as a form of bullying. Those who experience cyberbullying often contemplate ending their lives or suffer from depression,” Ms Prasad said.

“Sometimes, victims of cyberbullying lack the courage to confide in their families and choose to keep their struggles to themselves, believing no one cares. Helplines are available, and families are always willing to help. The first step is opening up to them.”

Obviously, sharing one’s problems with others can alleviate some of the burdens they carry.

Ms Prasad’s advice to her peers is to pursue their dreams and that of their parents’ while building the strength necessary to boldly confront life’s challenges.
