Finance Minister and Member for Alotau Charles Abel has been confirmed as the leader of Our Development Party (ODP).
This was announced after all the formalities were concluded with the Office of the Registrar of Political parties and Candidates.
Mr Abel takes over from Abau MP Sir Puka Temu in a small ceremony that was witnessed by party members and executives including one of the founders Andy Kenamo at Lamana Hotel on Wednesday evening.
“We have now gone through the paperwork in terms of the transition of leadership of Our Development Party from Sir Puka to myself. I want to express my thanks to the executives of the party, the two founders Andy Kenamo and Sir Puka and everybody that played a part in the development of Our Development Party,” Mr Abel said.
“It gives me great pleasure and honour to be able to assume the mantle from Sir Puka and I am proud to take up that role and have a place in the new government.
“We will, over the next couple of weeks and months, formulate policies in building up the party. It has its short history and ODP participated in the last two elections, while having few people come second and Sir Puka coming through. It is our intention to build on that foundation announce the revise or revamp policy framework of the party in terms of honesty, transparency and action based leadership.”
Mr Abel said the foundation has been set but needs a revision of the policy and building on human development and rural development platforms and the empowering of the people especially in the rural areas.
Sir Puka, in congratulating Mr Abel, said ODP has now formalised the handing over of the party leadership.
