Minister for Public Service Elias Kapavore has confirmed that housing allowances for non-contract public servants remain at K12 per fortnight.
Mr Kapavore said this while responding to questions raised by Northern Governor Gary Juffa who said that the welfare of public servants and their benefits had still not been addressed which led to low morale and output.
Mr Juffa also queried whether the Special Parliamentary Public Service Review team report will be tabled and recommendations made be made public and scrutinised to best serve the people of PNG.
Mr Kapavore in response said that the housing allowance had still been there for a couple of years and that his department and team would bring it to the attention of the NEC to see accommodation as part of the employment package.
“Housing does not come as part of the employment contract, but now with the modern working age we need to see that the welfare and housing of employees are looked after,” he said. Mr Kapavore said that the reports had been given and that the team also went to other countries to see how their public service was performing. “I am fully aware of these reports and a lot of good recommendations and will be revisiting the recommendations. We need to have a look at reports given in the past and the possibility to implement reports of the review team,” he said.
