Direct funding vital to promote agriculture

Regional agricultural workshops are necessary, Agriculture Minister Benny Allan told a workshop under the national agriculture sector plan in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands province yesterday.
Mr Allan said regional workshops are necessary to get views from the stakeholders- farmers and provincial administrations in the development of this plan which is aimed at transforming the sector and creating wealth and income earning opportunities.
Mr Allan said the expectation of the plan was to get the government to provide more direct funding to promoting agriculture activities right down to the district and village levels.
“I want more attention to be given to the agriculture sector, there should be more budgetary support to enable us to help our 85 per cent population who depend on agriculture for their livelihood,” he said.
Mr Allen also said the NASP should address one common problem faced by vegetable farmers in the region which was the transportation of fresh produce, cold storage and marketing facilities.
He hoped that DAL, Fresh Produce Development Agency and private sector can work together to make some improvements in this subsector.
