Due recognition is a must for PNG’s quiet women achievers

This year’s City Pharmacy Limited (CPL) Pride of PNG awards for women’s empowerment is another well deserved choice for the five remarkable achievers.
In any society women are the group most looked down on and it is mostly by men and institutions in the long history of mankind.
It is a struggling and tough fight everywhere else in the world and we in PNG must achieve that level of equity which society must have and strive for.
The recipients in this year’s awards come from different backgrounds and have achieved wonders in areas that are normally not the attention of high level politics and public expenditure budgets.
How they have managed to achieve results from areas least expected to yield success is truly remarkable.
For example in the category of bravery and courage, the Wewak recipient just fought against all odds and mainly a group of rogue policemen that violated a teenage girl under circumstances akin to a war zone.
It is frightening to think that the importance of human rights just dissipates into thin air when there is a police raid and all manner of human beings can be subjected to some of the worst forms of violation.
It needed more than the courageous single-minded woman to defend the rights of the oppressed teenager and at her own expense in being brutalised herself and wrongfully locked up perhaps under the pretext of obstructing police investigations.
But thank goodness justice has prevailed.
Another is working in an area that restores the dignity of persons living with disabilities and not so ordinary because this involves blindness and the lack of sight.
Being able to master Braille is a specialist accomplishment and for persons who are mostly self-taught and eager to learn and help that special group is a commitment of a lifetime.
No ordinary person can dedicate her life to fulfilling the ambitions of this special group of people without the ability to use their sight.
Those are just examples of the wider field of achievements many unsung women heroes dedicate their time for the good and benefit of their local communities which in many cases are most neglected.
The CPL group, sponsors and other supporting organisations should be thanked for having come up with the concept of recognising women achievers which are truly representative of the pride of the country.
Those women and their co-workers and volunteers truly deserve a big thank you from this country for what they stand for in their respective communities.
They are an inspiration to this country and the future generation and deserve the confidence bestowed on them.
Well done indeed.
