Fisheries helps Bowali school

BY JOAN BAILEY

National Fisheries Authority (NFA) has launched its first project at the Wagang fisheries project impact area.

NFA managing director John Kasu and his team were at Bowali Primary School in Lae yesterday to officially hand-over K900,000 school fencing project to the school administration and board of management.

Head teacher Allan Apuahe said NFA’s intervention to fund the school fencing will help address the school’s ongoing problem of break and enter, damage to school properties and facilities, as well as damage to teachers’ houses by outsiders.

Mr Apuahe said the school really needs a proper fence, so when the NFA consulted the school to fund a project, the school management and board agreed to begin with fencing and then the other projects with classrooms, administration building and staff accommodation to come later. “We want to ensure our students that they are safe and properties of the school are safe without any disturbance by outsiders or influences of community related problems to worry about,” he said.

Mr Kasu said the project is part of NFA’s corporate social responsibility and this is the first project.

He said the school is located at one of the impacted communities of the proposed fisheries port project, so they will work with the landowners to see more developments happening at the community level.

Lae district education manager Kaumu Laga thanked NFA for assisting the school with its urgent need.

Mr Laga said that Bowali primary is a level six school and such infrastructures can raise the level of the school.

He appealed to surrounding communities to keep their issues away from the school and not to touch any school properties including the new fence.
