Lae authorities must clean the city up once and for all

It keeps popping up like a bad festering wound and it just simply undermines the standing of the authorities with the seemingly out of control law and order, health, maladministration and other teething problems associated with Lae city in Morobe Province.
Lae is supposed to be one of the best managed city centres in the entire country, but as stated does not seem to progress anywhere near where it is supposed to be.
The recent killing among others, school fights, worsening road network conditions, ethnic clashes and deteriorating infrastructure are endlessly persistent and ever present despite some of the best remedial efforts put in.
The authorities there must simply come up with better and effective management of their problematic situation.
While the private sector is doing all it can to maintain their part of the bargain in assisting with improved conditions, city authorities and the administration seem quite helpless in finding the most effective solutions to fix the mess they constantly are faced with.
The police on other hand play their part as best as they can with the limited resources allocated to them in maintaining law and order.
Now the city is faced with the threat of the dreaded polio disease which reveals the more larger part of the threat to society which no one wants to talk about and tackle.
That is the unhygienic conditions of the settlements right around the city which has now reared its ugly head with the polio disease.
For too long no one has entertained and cared to worry about the conditions in the settlements.
And this is understood being what they are as unplanned settlements springing up everywhere.
Town and urban city planning authorities know it too well, that unplanned settlements pose the biggest threats to health mainly and stifle formal infrastructure development causing untenable problems on the long run.
Lae problems are becoming manifest of this.
The quick and straight forward questions to Lae city authorities is what are their immediate urgency plans to clamp down on law and order issues, what level of support are they providing to stamp out the threat of polio affecting the healthier city population and among others what are they going to do about unplanned settlements.
They cannot just sit by and expect miracles to fall down from the heavens to deal with their everyday problems.
They must take drastic action now, deal with their problems head on and if it means stepping on people’s toes so be it.
Lae city must be restored to a proper modern day metropolitan municipality.
