Lae to revive PNG Red Cross Society branch

BY NATALIE CHOLOHEI

The PNG Red Cross society Morobe branch aims to revive its operation in the province following a recent major change in its administrative positions.

Seven new members of the executives were elected to take office with hopes of fully implementing what is expected of them.

There were claims that the PNGRCS Morobe branch have not been effectively carrying out its mandated duties for four years.

The new members anticipate a positive change in their operation.

Danny Duba was elected new Morobe branch chairman along with six others for the positions of deputy chairman, treasurer, secretary, general assembly representative and two youth representatives.

Mr Duba said the failure to perform as expected was because of management issues resulting in lack of finance to carry out their programs.

“There were big problems in the Morobe branch for four to six years now affecting our operation. In the past PNG Red Cross Morobe branch was running well up until in 2015 when we started having office mismanagement and misappropriation of funds,” Mr Duba said.

He said PNG Red Cross Society is expected to offer service to vulnerable communities and build their community resilience during times of disaster and emergencies; unfortunately the Morobe branch was not able to provide these services in the province.

“All the vehicles were sold and we are financially down so we have failed miserably in the past years to provide the first aid service for the people in times of disaster, emergencies or any epidemic,” Mr Duba added.

The branch was not operating independently according to the organisation’s seven fundamental principles because of the lack of resource and funding; and was riding under other government departments like police and disaster to attend to any emergency case.
