Prime Minister Peter O’Neill praised the achievement on PNG female tennis player Abigail Tere-Apisah after winning her first pro title in Singapore on Sunday.
Commenting on her victory, O’Neill said: “The Nation is very pleased and very proud to see Abigail Apisah in winning her first professional tennis title.
“It has taken a lot of hard work from Abigail, her coach and family to reach this goal.
“Tennis is not a sport that has been prominent in Papua New Guinea, so when one of our own rises to the top levels it is a very proud achievement.
“Her victory goes to show that when you are dedicated, work had and never lose sight of your dreams you can make great achievements.
“She is a great role-model for our youth across many sports.
“We look forward to Abigail returning to Papua New Guinea and sharing her story of success with our people, particularly the youngsters that look up to her.”
The 26-year-old from Morobe and Central beat top seed Valeria Savinykh (Russia) 6-3, 6-2 in two sets in the ITF US$25,000 at the Kallang Squash and Tennis Centre in Singapore.
