Party congratulates PM O’Neill

THE People’s National Congress Party has congratulated Prime Minister and party leader Peter O’Neill for the successful hosting of APEC.

“As usual, many will claim and give credit where it is due but at the end of the day, APEC PNG happened under Mr O’Neill’s watch and it is he who deserves the most credit,” the party executives said.

“On behalf of PNC, we congratulate PM O’Neill, Minister for APEC 2018 Justin Tkatchenko MP, APEC Coordinating Authority chief executive officer Chris Hawkins, heads of departments, State-owned enterprises and business partners for their contribution towards the delivery of APEC 2018.”

The executives said that events of such significance required decisive leadership, fortitude and determination which Mr O’Neill possessed to “see it through to its conclusion”.

“Congratulations, Prime Minister,” the executives said.

“You have all proven to us and the world that PNG has come of age.

“APEC PNG may not have had the glamour, glitter and aura of super power money but we did it the Pacific Way, aboard the Pacific Jewel on the Pacific waters of Fairfax Harbour.

“That’s priceless. Beats Gorky Park, People’s Square, Sheba Park and Central Park – anytime.”

The party said it was a milestone event that marked a turning point in the nation’s history and positioned it well to embrace the digital future.

“We extend our gratitude to Australia and New Zealand for their assistance with security and funding to host the event,” the executives said.

“Most of all, we commend our citizens for their tolerance, support and cooperation for this historical challenge. Critics and naysayers said APEC 2018 would fail to materialise and it would not bring about any tangible benefits to PNG.

“They were all wrong.”

The party said APEC 2018 brought many benefits even though it failed to issue a joint official communiqué owing the differences between China and United States.

The PNG government struck various multimillion kina bilateral and multilateral deals through the APEC fraternity and framework. The value of the benefits secured exceed the expenditure for hosting APEC.

“We at the party level take pride in our Prime Minister and party leader and thank you all patriotic Papua New Guineans.”
