PAPUA New Guinea has raised the bar for an APEC visa with its most efficient e-visa processing system for the 2018 APEC year.

APEC economies attending the women in economic forum have shared their sentiments about the new system with one of the officials saying: “Chile will now have to live up to this standard”.

During the visit to Bougainville, the APEC economy delegates said PNG had one of the best most efficient e-visa processing systems which they said other economies have taken on board for their respective countries.

Chief migration officer Solomon Kantha told the Post-Courier that PNG is a unique APEC member country to host the leaders summit this year.

He said one of the various reasons why was the scale and size of the economy which is a development trajectory and being a Pacific Island nation, which is predominantly still traditional and mostly “untouched” in most parts of the country.

“There is nothing much we can show but one achievement PNG can be proud of is that we have been praised for having the best and most efficient e-visa processing system for APEC ever!

“Yes, that’s correct and we have received accolades from Russia, Indonesia, Peru, Chile and others,” Mr Kantha said.

“There is no need for APEC delegates to walk into one of our overseas diplomatic missions or to travel to a country which has a PNG mission to get a visa prior to traveling to PNG.

“PNG missions don’t even have to worry about how they are going to process hundreds of visa applications from a particular country.

“As long as the delegates have gone through the necessary checks and accreditation process, they instantly receive an e-visa travel authority in their email and get on a plane to PNG right away.

“Yes literally within seconds if all their details are in order there will be no need for them to go through the hassle of lodging a separate visa application or visiting a PNG mission,” Mr Kantha said.

He also said there were more things to come from the Immigration Office for PNG and one of them would be a visa on arrival and online visa applications.
