Papua New Guinea

TB and polio in the National Capital District must be fully eradicated

Papua New Guinea’s capital city Port Moresby has no choice but to fully eradicate TB and polio because it is the gateway to the country.
The inevitable is that, anything negative or threatening is a disaster to the country’s international reputation.
Frightening figures have evolved with TB cases reaching an unprecedented 6000 last year in the NCD alone from 35,000 cases reported around the country over the same period.
For polio one case of a child has been reported, but a total of 120 potential cases have been identified.
Polio vaccinations will be immediately given to over 120,000 children ages between 5-9 years and up to 15 years also.
The treatment of polio is completely manageable in the NCD and Health authorities are on top of it.
This is except for TB which like polio is stealthy and before anyone realises it, they would have infected thousands of people that least expected it because it is spread quite easily through the atmosphere or thin air.
This is not good news at this time of the year for the country because PNG is hosting APEC 2018 and knowledge of such a threat may have serious repercussions on the level of attendance.
APEC brings opportunities and advantages in the economic and business sense and enhances bilateral relations with the most powerful and not so powerful countries in the world.
PNG needs all these partners in order to enhance its economic development and international trade ratings.
As such it should now take radical steps to contain any possible threats or spread of both dreaded diseases and set up strict quarantine measures to ensure there is no possible chance of contamination.
All venues especially for APEC should be thoroughly quarantined and health and sanitation measures be completely upgraded to the highest level for the sake of PNG’s very important international visitors.
PNG must not wait for anybody else to tackle these looming threats but take the lead itself to thoroughly eradicate any possible chances of spreading and infecting the visitors.
PNG must prove to the world that it can manage any such threats and demonstrate its ability to defuse any possible spread envisaged.
PNG’s international reputation is definitely on the line with these two threats and it must assure the entire world that the situation is under control and will not stand in the way of powerful leaders coming to discuss matters of global importance on its shores.
The government needs the support of all its people and institutions, and this is the time to rally in unison to showcase the true strength of PNG.
