Villagers build aid post to fight polio

By RAMCY WAMA

MORE than 10,000 people living at Avi block area in Anglimp South Waghi, Jiwaka Province will have access to a new aid post built by the people through self reliance.

With the outbreak of polio and other curable diseases, the people of Avi block had been neglected over many years to have access to a better health centre.

According to the chairman of the Mission Workers Development Services Association Incorporated (MWDSAI) pastor John Dupi, the need for proper health care in the Avi block area is a cry for hundred of mothers and children for many years.

Mr Dupi said the association executives have seen the need for a proper health facility for the mothers and children and built a new aid post that was opened on the independence weekend.

“Avi block is a home to people from all over PNG,” he said.

“We have people from the coast, islands and highlands in Avi block. The need for proper health facility in Avi block is something that women and children had longed for many decades.

“Now with the polio outbreak, we feel that its about time we take the initiative to build our own aid post.

“If we wait and cry for help from the elected leaders and politicians, the chances of putting our children at risk with the outbreak of polio are high.

“The people through self reliance and with little support from the association had built a new aid post that will serve over 10, 000 adults and over 2, 000 children in Avi block.”

A representative from the Anglimp South Waghi District Development Authority, Toni Tika officiated the opening of the aid post.

Representatives from Rotary, Mathew Gauman, Arabica Coffee Jonny Mape and an NGO Norma Sagoma pledged to support the aid post operations.
