Puntland military court sentences three men for membership in al Shabab

Wednesday September 27, 2023

Garowe (HOL) - A military court in Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in Somalia, on Thursday sentenced three men found to be members of al-Shabab militants.

The court sentenced Mohamed Deeq Salad Abdi to 20 years, Ismail Daud Jirow Harfanay to 30 years, and Abdulkhadir Abukar Sheikh Mohamed to 15 years.

Prosecutors asserted that the three men were involved in acts of explosions and murders in Galkayo town. The court also determined that they had affiliations with al-Shabab networks, some of whose members have already been executed by the court, while others remain incarcerated.

The three men confessed to the crimes they were accused of, although their lawyers argued that the court's accusations were unfounded.

In March of this year, the Puntland military court executed 13 militants who were members of both al-Shabab and Islamic State terror groups. Additionally, the court disclosed that it had executed five Somali soldiers for their involvement in killing civilians in Puntland.
